LinkSys LinkSys WRT54GL - Wi-Fi Wireless-G Broadband Router with Linux Firmware

The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with Linux is based on the Linux operating system and contains firmware released under the GNU General Public License GPL). The open source software provided with the router has been modified by third party developers to create firmware which adds additional features. The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with Linux is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G 802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B 802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

Has some issues

Overall, this is a very nice router. I currently connect a smart TV and desktop computer wired and on the wireless side, I have 2 laptops, 2 ipods, 3 cell phones, an xbox and a printer. You can notice a slowdown when many devices are in use and streaming a movie to the TV is choppy. My biggest beef is that this router is affected by my children's ipods in a negative way. The performance degrades to the point where the wired support is extremely slow and the wireless basically stops. A quick reboot of the router (unplug and replug# will clear the problem but, in a few days of ipod use, it will need to be reset again. This is apparently a known issue #search the internet) and I wish there was a solution other than a periodic reboot. Other than that, it has good range and signal, easy to setup and has really cool blinky lights on the front.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Don't buy this product

First one purchased would not allow a hard set IP to connect to the condo association network. I then turned off the router function and connected it to the existing router to just use its wireless function. Wireless works for a period and then completely shuts down. Exchanged the product and second one can have the IP hard set. Wireless has the same issues as the first one. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this model. I have used LinkSys products for years and have never had issues with their products until this one.
No, I do not recommend this product.

The WRT54GL is a workhorse that has been around for years and still performs very well today. I load DD-WRT on these routers, set them up properly and they run for years. I like the removable antennas for being able to install high gain antennas.
Even though this is an 802.11G router (not N) it is still an excellent choice for a reliable and robust router. When DD-WRT is loaded on it, it is capable enough to be a good small office router.
Yes, I recommend this product.
